The students’ responsibilities are as follows:
- Be on time for class and get your projects out when you come in. Always check the board for daily updates.
- Turn in work on time, labeling it on the back with your first and last name, date, and title of work in the lower right hand corner(late work and/or lack of this data will have points deducted). Remember, no name means no grade! Please, no initials!
- Always do your best. It is up to YOU to put all of your effort into these projects. Points will be deducted for sloppy work.
- Sketchbooks should be used for project sketches and to work in when you finish a project early.
- An 8 slide PowerPoint presentation of an assigned subject is due during the last week of the semester. You will have the information needed to start this assignment the first week of class, and it is up to YOU to do your research outside of class! This is a part of your final grade!
- Art is fun, and have a good time with it! It is okay to have meaningful conversations while you are working on your projects, but NOT when the teacher is giving instructions, background, and demonstrations!

Your basic projects for the year are as follows (But not necessarily in this order or entirety):
- Self portrait collage: Create yourself using magazines, newspapers, etc. Think about skin tones, features, and also pictures that say something about your personality (Class evaluation).
- Charcoal still life: Draw the still life using charcoal and white chalk. You will be working on your values and shading, while learning to control a difficult medium.
- Plaster Carving: Create a relief carving using drywall. You will mix and pour your own plaster carving block. You will think of an interesting idea and carve it into your block and then paint it to make it more interesting.
- Choice drawing: Choose a subject and draw it anyway you would like using proper shading and values. Pick one area of interest, and using a razor, cut it out and put colored paper behind it.
- Texture Study: Find as many textures as you can around your house, school, work, etc. Create a project of abstract shapes, realistic shapes, etc. Cut out your textures and add them into your project to create a textured collage like picture. Use the concept of layering and shading to make it more interesting!
- Papermaking: Create your own paper using a blender and newspaper. Once you have your paper pulp, use in/on some type of mold by pressing or casting by pressing, and create your own paper sculpture. Paint and mount onto a background or frame (Class evaluation).
- Charcoal Drawing: Still life using Charcoal pencils, sticks, stumps and fingers, blending the charcoal together, techniques.
- Mobiles: Kinetic sculpture: Think about 4-6 shapes or images that are related. Recreate them out of found materials. Paint, color, or create them in your own personal way. Hang them in a mobile style using balance and rhythm.
- Ceramics: Build three separate vessels (any clay subject that can hold something, such as a box, vase, etc) choosing from a slab, coil, pinch, pressing method. Upon Bisk firing, students will choose a glaze and fire a glaze. The class will watch the demonstration video and check some websites before they start! Wedging is a must!
- Mosaics: Break tiles, glaze or paint tiles. Think of a cool design or idea that you would like to create using the tiles. Place tiles on contact paper or background depending on materials available, use quick rite concrete or grout.
- Choice Painting: Paint whatever you want using proper tints, shades, and values! Make sure your subject is interesting!
- Photo extension: Use a black and white or color picture and extend it.
- Wood cut prints: The students will learn about bas relief carving, and the understanding of how the positive and negative effect can occur in carving and making prints. The student will receive a 4 by 6 piece of basswood. The students will think of an interesting design or subject and use carving tools to create it in their block. The student will be required to print their woodcut print on at least 3 different surfaces. The students will be encouraged to be creative and to not use the same old paper! Materials: Basswood block, carving tools, acrylic paint, multi-surfaces for printing.

2nd Quarter Goals
The students will learn about clay and vocabulary of working with clay. There will be three areas that they will explore:
1. Reacquainting themselves with the four areas of clay building: Coil, slab, wheel, mold and sculpture
2. The will use a combinations of these methods to create an advanced, viable clay vessel that is both decorative and functional.
During this nine weeks they will look at the history of pottery, including 'In The News' quizzes, use vocabulary lists to write an essay. By learning the history and methods associated with clay the students will take away an understanding of how these figure into our history and culture.
